Many providers are leaving some portion of unresolved insurance accounts untouched due to staffing shortfalls, budget constraints or simply an influx of volume. If left unworked, those accounts will age out, become less collectable over time and eventually be written off to bad debt.

Resolving aged accounts receivable before it is written off to bad debt is challenging for most health systems, hospitals and large physician groups. Many organizations struggle with not enough staff to tackle accounts receivable, especially as those accounts get older. Unfortunately, the longer those accounts languish, the more difficult it becomes to resolve them and the more likely they are to end up written off to bad debt.

In an era where the healthcare environment is constantly changing, attendees at the 2019 Michigan Revenue Cycle Association Fall Conference addressed how healthcare providers can be as informed as possible and stay prepared to meet the challenges of delivering excellence in patient care in a world where everyone is doing more with fewer resources.
